Every Tuesday, we get to go to the Red Deer Public (Dawe) library. Usually we have part of a story book read to us, but this week, we watched a Tumble-book. After we spend some time with our lovely librarian, we get to choose some books to take home. We are allowed to take 2 books home each week. Currently, as a grade 3 class, we are OBSESSED with Graphic Novels. We can not get enough of them! Have you ever read a graphic novel?
"When traveling through Peru, it’s hard not to notice the colorful handicrafts made by locals. Hats, scarves, bags, socks, sweaters and headbands are weaved with care using locally-sourced fabrics like alpaca, vicuna and sheep." http://epicureandculture.com/quechua-culture-preserving-the-peruvian-weaving-tradition/ As we come to the end of our study of Peru, we have been doing some fun projects. We had the opportunity to weave our very own place mats. They are really looking great, and we can't wait to show you what the final project looks liked!
Stay tuned for the final results! Today, we learned a new way to pray. It is called 'Praying in Colour'. We worked as a class to make prayers for the people in our lives, through drawings and designs.
Our prayer always begins with the Lord's name. This was the centre of our prayers. Next, we added prayers and details for those around us (family, friends, teachers, classmates, etc.). After each section, we concluded by holding our hand over our prayer, and saying "Amen". We know that as we are adding detail to our work, and thinking about our prayers, God can hear our intentions and wishes, and everything we are praying for. It is always fun to have guests in our room, and we are very thankful that Mrs. Bolhuis was able to come in and teach us how to pray in colour. Negative and positive space is a tricky concept to understand. In art today, we worked with negative and positive space. A negative space can be thought of as a silhouette. We used silhouette of a snowman, and a snowman's shadow to demonstrate our understanding of positive and negative space.
This was a difficult project because we had to draw our snowman and tree very lightly, then we had to cut on ONLY the edge of our drawing to create our silhouette. We had to make sure that we didn't chop up the paper into bits. It took a couple of tries, but don't they look GREAT? What amazing artists we have here in 3L. At St. Patrick's school, we feel that it is important to recognize our students for all of their hard work. For the month of November, in grade 3L, we recognized 4 students that went above and beyond to be focused learners and great friends, who follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Great work, Andriy, Jordyn, Ken and Dante! We are all so proud of you!
We are looking for students 8 years and older who would like to ring the big bell at Sacred Heart Church before Masses on weekends. Anyone interested can contact Ron at 403-343-2996 or Sacred Heart Parish Office at [email protected].
Remembrance Day allows us the opportunity to thank the people who are currently serving, or have served for our beautiful country. They have provided us with peace, freedom and happiness. This Remembrance Day, we thank God for the soldiers he has given us. All of the students in 3L wrote a prayer, thanking God for the soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for us. Here are 3 prayers by Nolan, Cyrus and Ken.
Annnnnnd we're off!
We have officially begun our new science unit of Building and Testing Designs with a Variety of Materials. To begin our unit, we discussed the importance of engineers in our world. For this unit, we will become a team of full-time engineers. We voted on a company name, and are now called the Pot of Gold Engineers. Yesterday, students had a challenge sent to their new Engineering Company. It was exciting! They were asked to test two different structures to see which would be stronger: an arch or a square shape. We set off making both shapes, and testing to see which would hold more weight. Which do you think won? Alberta Program of Studies:
